What Are the Grille and Kickplate For?

Where it sits

Across the face of the cabinet, and exactly where depends on the model: some built-ins carry the louvred panel high above the doors, others put it at floor level with a plain strip closing the space beneath. Either way it is the only opening the machinery has. Behind it are the condenser and the fan drawing room air over it, which is how your food’s heat leaves the kitchen.

Sub-Zero calls the Classic Series grille a defining emblem of its refrigeration across more than seven decades, which is why householders read it as decoration. On a Classic cabinet it runs across the top, above the doors. A column panelled to match the joinery shows no stainless band anywhere — which does not mean it has no intake, only that the intake is down at floor level behind a kickplate finished like the rest of the run.

How it fails

Seldom as a component, nearly always as an airway. Dust arrives carrying cooking grease, so it does not blow away again: it mats onto the fins and stays. A cat or a dog doubles the rate. The louvres silt up. A tray gets stored against the toe space. Each does the same thing: less air moves, less heat leaves, and the cabinet runs longer for the same result. In a Tarzana kitchen in September that is the difference between a machine that gets a rest and one that never does.

The trim itself gives trouble. Clips break, a panel goes back out of true and catches a door on its swing, a kickplate left off leaves the bay open to whatever the room sweeps underneath.

What replacing it involves

Less than people expect, and the cleaning counts for more than the part. The panel comes off, the condenser is brushed and vacuumed rather than poked at through the slots, and it goes back square so the louvres line up and the door clears it. A cracked one is changed for the genuine Sub-Zero item. This is the single job here a householder can share: panel off, vacuum, panel on — the rest of that compartment is a sealed machine under pressure and live connections, and stays a technician’s work.
