What Wears Out on a Sub-Zero Drawer?

Where it sits

Sub-Zero builds refrigerator and freezer drawers as undercounter units with stainless or panel-ready fronts, and the hardware in question is split between two places. The running gear is fixed to the inner walls of the compartment, one side each, and carries the box along with everything loaded into it. The moulding is on the rear face of the front, following all four edges, and lands against the frame of the opening as the travel finishes.

Neither is on show while the drawer is closed, which is most of their working life.

How it fails

The running gear goes first, and quietly. Grit, a spill that dried, a rime of frost in a freezer compartment: each makes one side heavier to move than the other, and the box begins finishing its travel at an angle. There is no squeal to warn you. The drawer merely wants a firmer push than it did a year ago, or it runs sweetly empty and stops short with the week’s shopping aboard.

The moulding gives way in its own fashion. Its worst edge is the low one, where nothing is drawing the material in — it rests there rather than being held. That edge takes a permanent flat under a heavy drawer, and once the flat exists the seal touches on three sides and hovers on the fourth. Frost along the back wall, or a front that feels cool to the palm, is what that looks like from outside.

Weight hurries both along: whatever is heaviest in a Los Angeles kitchen ends up in the lowest drawer, and that drawer goes out of true first.

What replacing it involves

Alignment, mostly. Running gear is not hardware you drop in and walk away from, since it is what holds the front level with the joinery either side of it: it gets set as much as fitted, and the drawer is run in and out until both sides finish together. Genuine Sub-Zero parts go in.

A new moulding on its own is simple and, on its own, pointless. It goes on once the travel has been put right, because asking fresh material to close a gap whose shape keeps changing gives you a fault you will be discussing again in a year.
